As the way the games are organized aren't even in release date order, the timeline for this Knuckles is as follows:

Old School/Genesis-era games > Advance > Adventure > Advance 2 > Advance 3 > Adventure 2
Personality: Knuckles is a surprisingly calm sort of person, most of the time. While he's very easy to get riled up (especially by people like Sonic, who know how to push his buttons) and definitely has a nasty temper once he is, the fact that he's lived a life of almost complete isolation means that he doesn't get quite as bothered when something happens. The Master Emerald, for instance, has been broken no less than twice (and stolen at least once), but even when it happens again he doesn't get annoyed or even panicked: he just goes after it to get it back.

Still, when Knuckles' temper has been triggered, it tends to run like a fire: very hot and destroying whatever's in its path, but burning out quickly. He really isn't the type to hold a grudge against someone (shown by how often Eggman can trick him despite all he's done and his friendly, if somewhat awkward, conversations with Rouge), and once the initial anger has been satisfied, it just seems to drop. It's only really around Sonic that his anger tends to snap on and off repeatedly, but that's because Sonic himself is both a target of the odd duality of Knuckles' attitude towards himself and because Sonic just absolutely loves saying or doing whatever he knows will anger Knuckles. When not around Sonic, or when Sonic behaves, he's usually a lot more chill.

It's been said that if Sonic is the wind, then Knuckles is the mountain. He's immovably stubborn when he puts his mind to it, and he has a manner of being very blunt and forward, not bothering with subtleties most of the time. While he can be tricky, if he really wants to be, he's a person who prefers the most direct solution; why waste your time solving the maze if you can just break the walls to get through it? The wind might blow around the trap, but the mountain will just eventually smash it by sheer weight.

Knuckles has a sense of duty that would put most anyone else to shame. He was born to be the guardian of the Master Emerald, and he fully intends to be the best one he can ever be, because he's proud of that duty. His life of isolation -- even from, apparently, any actual family -- has left him without any real information about why he's supposed to do this, but that doesn't deter him at all: in Adventure, he says that he'll probably be on Angel Island, guarding the Master Emerald forever, and even though he doesn't really know why, "perhaps it's better that way."

Like all people, Knuckles has a slight streak of jealousy. While he'll never admit it, he's envies Sonic's lifestyle; being able to be free and unchained, going where you want, when you want, and doing whatever it is you want. Even so, he doesn't resent his lot in life at all, and he wouldn't give up being the Guardian even if he was given the choice to. The fact that he can go join up with his friends for some adventures at times, is at least enough to settle that part of himself usually, since -- even if it might be hard to guess -- he actually enjoys new situations and learning on the fly.

When it comes to friends, Knuckles is one of the best you'll find. He's as loyal to them as he is to his duty, and is more than happy to come down and help when his friends really need it (or even help out those he doesn't know who need help). He's willing to (temporarily) pause in his scouring for the Master Emerald (or its shards) to lend a hand, if necessary, partly because it's just needed and partly because he knows that the Master Emerald can always be recovered. Being what it is, it's not easily destroyed; broken, yes, and he's even done it himself to prevent it from being taken from him, but as long as he can get the pieces, he can restore it back to its original state. People aren't nearly as durable, and so they tend to be more important if it comes down to it. He can always just get Tails to find some way to dig a shard out if it's somewhere he can't get to, after all!

His interest in being a treasure hunter (and the practice around Angel Island) means that he can actually "sniff out" things if he puts his mind to it: despite not being able to sense them like he can the Emerald Shards, he had no trouble finding three keys in Eggman's base to get everyone inside. While he may not have any real desire to hoard them (he'll keep what he finds if he likes it, leave it or give it if he doesn't), he has a sharp eye for treasure none the less, and he can appreciate particularly nice or pretty pieces.

Knuckles is, perhaps not surprisingly for someone who lived their life on a floating empty island, absolutely terrified of ghosts, to the point that encountering a huge one actually made his voice go a couple of octaves higher in fear. While this doesn't stop him from fighting them (to defend himself or otherwise), it does mean that he tends to be very easy to startle or outright frighten when it comes to "ghost stories." Because of that, he gets very irritated when people poke fun at his fear, and is more than willing to argue that it's perfectly justified because ghosts.

Perhaps one of Knuckles' most famous traits is the fact that he's just simply too gullible. He genuinely and earnestly believes that everyone has some good in them, and his straight-forward and simple-minded nature makes it hard for him to recognize when he's being lied to a lot of the time. More than anything, realizing he's been tricked is something that sets off his temper, and that stubbornness will snap to making sure whoever tricked him pays for it some way; with Eggman, stopping his Plan of the Week is enough for him.

While other people may get it worse, being yelled at or even fought if necessary, Knuckles is not someone who resorts to violence against people very quickly. He's all too aware of just how powerful he is, and while he definitely wants to hurt someone at times, he doesn't actually want to seriously hurt them... and killing them is right out. Knuckles firmly believes that no one deserves to die, and has even gone so far as to risk his own life to save the life of one of his enemies. Because of that, he tends to only actively fight someone if he knows they're strong enough to take it, or if they start the fight first. In either case, he's always careful to hold back on his strength as needed.

Because of his life on Angel Island, Knuckles is not very good when it comes to being overly social. He can hold a conversation just fine, assuming he or the other person can provide enough topics he understands to keep it going, but he becomes very uncomfortable and almost outright skittish in large crowds, heavily industrialized areas, or around high levels of technology without someone (Tails) who understands it around. This can sometimes make him irritable and aggressive, but his curiosity leads him to look around anyway at times; just don't expect him to even remotely know what he's doing or how to actually be social and polite. He might not live directly in Ponyville, for instance, but he'll swing by it sometimes to get a look around.
Strengths: The main strength Knuckles tends to have is very literal; namely, his strength. He's classified as a "Power" character in Heroes, and he can very easily punch through huge boulders or dig straight down into solid rock. He also has the other side of the coin: Endurance. Knuckles can take an amazing amount of punishment, and he's been shown to actually take a direct and prolonged severe electrocution, then keep going, if weakly.

Besides that, he has a connection to the Emeralds of the Sonic Canon, able to sense anything close to the Chaos Emeralds among other things: being able to use the Master Emerald's nullifying ability, being able to go Super though the use of the Chaos Emeralds, and being able to go Hyper through the use of the Super Emeralds. He can also glide (but not fly) indefinitely, but lacking wings on his pony-self, that's probably not something that's going to come into play.

Knuckles is a decently strong swimmer as well, able to tread water and swim easily. Like every other Sonic character, Knuckles can run at a pretty fast speed, and his reflexes are fairly sharper than most.
Weaknesses: I hit it up in the personality part, but I feel it needs to be stressed here too: Knuckles. Is. GULLIBLE. The poor guy is really too easily tricked sometimes if someone's actually trying to trick him, though he generally is not very happy when he finds out he's been tricked (and having someone who can punch through cliff walls being unhappy with you is never a healthy thing). On top of that, he has a weakness to girls that's almost hilarious, feeling uncomfortable and outright shy around them. The only exceptions seem to be those that are currently a threat to him (like Rouge at points) and those who are really young (like Cream).

Besides that, his temper can get the best of him sometimes and his rather blunt attitude towards life can have him stumbling into trouble where other people obviously see traps.

Also, ghosts. No me gusta.
Possessions: The Master Emerald (since he can shrink and hammerspace that in canon), the Air Necklace, and the Shovel Claw!
Pony/Animal Type: Unicorn, both because it fits with his connection to the Emeralds and because, come on, having a super-strong unicorn is hilarious.
Cutie Mark: The Master Emerald, of course! He was born to guard it.

SAMPLES
First Person: Here you go!
Third Person: Knuckles had never had any regrets about his lifestyle. Yes, it was solitary, and some would even say boring, just sitting on an island and watching over it. Some people would have even gone so far as to call it lonely. But whatever it was, the life was his, and he was proud to have that duty.

Coming here to Equestria... It had been a large adjustment. Suddenly, there were people everywhere and there was a way everyone kept in contact with everyone else. The entire world was different and he didn't know anything about it, not the creatures who lived here or the layout. He had never been one for crowds, but even trying to shy away from them was almost impossible, and that princess -- whatever her name was -- had enough of a commanding aura that even he knew messing with her would be bad.

Having the Master Emerald had helped a lot; even if Angel Island didn't come, he knew that his home could last through pretty much anything. His duty was to the Emerald, and it being with him meant that he could relax, at least a little. And once he'd stopped suffering culture shock, it had actually been... fun, in a way. Like the adventures with Sonic, it was something new and exciting, something else for him to do.

But the novelty of the place wore off after so long. The adventure and treasure hunting was fun, sure, and it was amazing what he could find around here simply because he could go places others couldn't -- or unearth them, if necessary -- but everything he found just had that lingering strangeness.

This wasn't Angel Island. These were discoveries, but they weren't things he knew. And, as envious of Sonic as he could be at times, with the hedgehog's wild and carefree life style, he was beginning to get antsy. Beginning to miss the soft and familiar noises of Angel Island, the landscape, the little hidden tricks and coves he knew all around it.

For the first time in his life...

Knuckles was feeling homesick. And he had no idea what to do about it.
